Fine Arts Institute - Creative Basket Weaving - Summer II

Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 1:00pm to 4:00pm

SAVS/School for Art & Visual Studies, SAVS 113

LOCATION: SAVS Room 113 INSTRUCTOR: Morgan Shipps CLASS FEE: $170.00 MATERIALS FEE: Partially covered by registration fee. Projects can be finished with provided materials, but students may bring other materials they enjoy. In this class we will explore basic basketry techniques, gain an understanding of how woven structures operate, and explore how these techniques can be applied to non-traditional materials. Not all “basket weaving” results in a vessel. Basketry weaving is essentially the act of weaving without a loom, and offers the artist the ability to use materials that aren’t compatible with looms. That said, if baskets are your goal, this class is a great way to launch your basketry journey! This class is open to all levels. The techniques we discuss will be accessible to the beginner, and will get you started. For the experienced basket maker, this class will offer you new ways to approach the “basket”. We can all benefit from the group studio experience; receiving feedback, encountering new ways of thinking, and build off one another’s energy. A note on my teaching style: New techniques, and material processes will be presented each class. This will give you an opportunity to try a variety of approaches. You might just find a new love! When you find that technique, you may want to keep going with it, exploring all that it can give you. Alternatively, you might come into this class with a particular goal, or dream project. This is where our “studio time” will come in. There will always be time to practice techniques, work on individual projects, and get more personalized guidance from me. The studio is a supportive and energetic environment! Materials: A portion of your registration fee will go towards the materials needed to complete the class weaving explorations. In addition to this fee, you will be provided with a small list of tools you will need to bring to class. (For example, scissors, and tape.) For everyone’s safety, we will not have a community pile for these items. With the above materials, you will be able to complete the class, with small baskets and basketry samples of your own creation. During the class, we will also discuss materials you may want to experiment with — materials you might not even think of as basketry materials now. Many students find a favorite technique, or discover a personalized project they want to pursue. (You may find you have a love for rubber tubing, for instance!) Students are always welcome to bring in additional materials and get help perusing there more individual journey.
